Hello out there. My name is Carianna Arredondo and I am a senior Studio art and English Writing major from DePauw University currently participating in the NY Arts Program. Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, transitioning from big city life to an even bigger city life style is definitely a process that takes time, consideration, and lots of apps. Navigating the MTA — delays, construction and all — is clearly a talent. Fellow NYAP colleagues and I have plugged together our skills to feature some of our favorite apps to use while in the city.

#1 FREE TRAVEL APP
The go-to app that everyone is using in the program, Hopstop, gives detailed subway, bus, train, taxi, walking and biking directions with real-time transit information via HopStop Live! and an official transit maps, nearby station search, and station-to-station schedules. This app is a must if you’re trying to get from point A to the L train in a jiffy. My personal favorite feature that Hopstop offers is the leisure of entering a point of destination rather than having to track down your destination’s actual address — just make sure you have your Hopstop map ready to go before you enter the wireless depths of the NYC subway.

#1 PAID FOR TRAVEL APP
While Hopstop offers great navigation, iTrans does it even better — and for only $3.99! iTrans renders more features like service alerts and countdown clocks for subway arrivals right on your phone. Its maps feature an interactive official MTA subway map. You may tap any station for directions and schedules or you may tap to find your current location on the map.

#1 THE 411 OF NYC ACCORDING TO THE NEW YORKER
GOINGS ON is a full length guide to the best of New York City culture by the editors of The New Yorker. This app provides event listings and recommendations from some of the best critics in the Big Apple. It’s easy to search for events based on location, date, critics picks and more. While Goings On is a great peak into a sophisticated night life of a New Yorker, college kids be advised, Goings On generally entertains to a more matured and wealthier crowd.

#1 APP FOR DEALS AND STEALS
Pulsd is a great app for finding superb meal specials and events around the city. This app was recommended to me from a friend at work who first started using it when she moved to the city three years ago. Pulsd is probably my favorite app for finding fun, FREE things to do around New York. Whether you’re interested in a sweet spa day, a free rooftop concert, or a free celebrity talk/book signing, Pulsd is the app for you.
