EMILY COLLASACCO- DIRECTOR OF URBAN ARTS/ SUMMER STREET WRITES:
Are you an artist, arts administrator or arts enthusiast looking for a unique volunteer opportunity this summer in New York City? If so, volunteer at Summer Streets 2014 to assist with the new Park Avenue Tunnel public art installation. Last year’s large-scale installation, Voice Tunnel by Rafael Lozano Hemmer, attracted 17,000 people throughout the three day event. It was the first time in the tunnel’s 179 year history that it was opened to pedestrians to roam and explore this architectural treasure.
This year’s Summer Streets event will be held the first three Saturdays in August (August 2, 9 and 16) between the hours of 7 am and 1 pm. The New York City Department of Transportation’s Public Art Program is seeking volunteers to assist alongside Summer Streets staff in presenting this year’s sound installation by Norwegian artist Jana Winderen. We will present her new work titled, Dive within the 7 block long tunnel, running from 33rd Street to 40th Street along Park Avenue. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, greeting the public, assisting with crowd control, maintaining an even pedestrian flow within the tunnel, offering information to the public about the installation, etc. To sign up, email:firstname.lastname@example.org.
