Staying Sane in the City

Being in New York presents you with a ton of opportunities to attend incredible events. Everyday, there are various things going on that peak your curiosity and seem vital to attend. This is one of the most incredible things about the city, but often times it is incredibly overwhelming. It can be hard not to lose yourself in the shuffle of jumping from one thing to the next and before you know it, your entire week has gone by without you taking one moment for yourself.

I recently got extremely caught up in everything the city has to offer, and completely neglected taking time out for myself to decompress and recharge. During this time, I discovered some vital tips to help me take full advantage of the city without losing my mind.

1. ALWAYS carry a journal.

This tip has been the most helpful for me during my time in New York. Journaling is a great way to organize your thoughts and allows you to escape into your own world. It is also something you can do whether you have ten minutes on the train, or a couple hours to yourself at home. Carrying a journal also helps you actually remember things. See a poster for an awesome event, write it down! Someone mentions an artist whose work you should definitely check out, write it in your journal! You randomly wake up at five in the morning and catch the sunrise, write about it! For me, journaling has been the best way for me to stay organized, remember things, and keep me aware of my surroundings.

2. Find what relaxes you and actually make time in your schedule to do it.

Okay, this one is difficult. With all of the things happening here, relaxing can often feel like a complete waste of time. BUT IT’S IMPORTANT! Without taking time out of your schedule to relax and breathe a little bit, you will absolutely lose your mind, I promise. So find what keeps you at peace, and do it. For me, that thing is yoga. It’s the best way for me to clear my mind and focus on what’s happening right now. Make “your thing” a part of your schedule. Treat it as a class, an important event, something that you absolutely cannot just skip. It may seem tedious and unnecessary at first, but it is immensely helpful and will remind you to actually do it.

3. Prioritize. 

As I mentioned before, the amount of events and things you can do on a daily basis in New York City is overwhelming. There is SO MUCH to do. That being said, if you actually want to go to awesome events, and keep your sanity, you have to prioritize. There are usually multiple things that I want to go to everyday. Unfortunately, these events often overlap and will be in completely different areas of the city. The most important thing to remember here is that, although you may want to, you can’t do it all. And that’s okay! Figure out the things you absolutely cannot miss, and don’t stress about what you can’t make it to. There will always be other cool, interesting, and exciting things to check out.
