During this semester here we would like to introduce you to some of the current students in the New York Arts Program. Each student here has a different background and story that they’re writing and we like to highlight their talents and achievements. I recently sat down with Hannah Schneider, who happens to be my amazing roommate, and talked with her about her experience so far in the program and living in New York.
Q: Where are you from?
Q: Where do you go to school?
A: Graduated in May of 2017 from Ball State University (Indiana)
Q: What is your internship?
A: Catapult (Publishing)
Q: Why this internship?
A: I heard about the company in college, read their online magazine and ended up liking them a lot.
Q: Does this tie in with your major/what you want to do in life?
A: Yes, my major was public communication and creative writing. This ties in exactly with my internship, because it has to do with creative writing, but I’m working for the publishing (publicity) side of it.
Q: Why NYAP/How did you hear about the program?
A: I have friends who had done this program in the past. I’ve applied to internships before and never really heard feedback from them, but with this program you have lots of options and have a program that is willing to share their contacts with you.
Q: Where is your “hot spot” in the city so far?
A: Probably Union Square, because it is comforting to be around college students and it’s a super welcoming spot. I also love literary events around the city.
Q: What has been your best experience so far?
A: The Brooklyn Book Festival. (With the company she works for she got to see behind the scenes of the festival and even work some of the events where she met people that she thought were really nice).
A: Being able to admit mistakes. If you do that it turns out so much better rather than blowing it off completely or lying.
Q: Subway or walking?
Q: Have you been to any events around the city?
A: Brooklyn book festival. Bowery poetry open mic night. Washington Square Outdoor Arts Festival.
Q: Any tips on how to save money while living here?
A: Don’t eat out all the time.
Q: Favorite part of NY? Park? Midtown? Queens? Brooklyn? Etc.
A: How close I am to art things in Midtown where our housing is.
Q: Is there something you are looking forward to doing?
A: I want to host a reading for Thread (Hannah’s online feminists arts collective that she created this year).
Q: Have you found any hidden spots in NY that you wanna share?
Q: Seen any celebs yet?
A: I think I saw Ashton Kutcher the other day.
