Five NYAP students had the opportunity to see a screening of the 2007 film Across the Universe followed by a discussion with the film’s director, Julie Taymor, at the opening night of the New Ohio Theatre’s NY Indie Theatre Film Festival. This festival centered around film projects that were produced by artists who primarily work in theater. The director of Across the Universe, Julie Taymor, has an impressive theater resume, including a Tony for best director of a musical, the first woman to receive this award, for The Lion King. The discussion with Julie Taymor included advice for artists across disciplines. Her belief that “limitation is freedom,” in particular, stuck with me. Across the Universe is a musical exclusively featuring songs by The Beatles. Taymor rose to her own challenge and executed an engaging movie that never felt forced or trite. Taymor additionally stressed the importance of collaborating with other artists that share your ideals while pushing you to think in new ways, something the New York Arts Program stresses as well.
